This is a real feed from a security camera from a supermarket parking lot. You will notice how the hijacker ties some cans to a woman's car. When she stops to investigate after starting to pull away, he jumps in her car and drives off, taking everything including her purse, cell phone and house keys -- not to mention her car!

ReplyDeleteJust can't be true. Where is this highjacker hiding? How does he know you won't be in the supermarket for 3 or 4 hours? Is he lurking around all this time? Where? (It's hard to find a place to lurk in a parking lot.) How does he know this is the one car where the driver would be stupid enough to get out for any reason at all without taking out his/her keys? Wouldn't you see the cans when you walked up to your car..almost always in a parking lot the rear faces out. Wouldn't somebody see him attaching the cans in the first place? This just doesn't make any sense at all.

ReplyDeleteSallie, if the car the carjacker targets is parked with rear facing out, cans can be tied under the front. Either way, kicking the cans under the car and you won't even see them. There are plenty of places to lurk in a parking lot...at the car next door, just pushing a cart around, etc. If you heard a rattly noise as you pulled out of your parking space, would you turn off your car and take your purse and keys out while you checked out what it was? Not many people are in a supermarket for 3 or 4 hours.
ReplyDeleteI could see this happening I'd probably shut off the engine, but leave the keys in the ign, for a "quick" check ,but my wife wouldn't. She locks her car even, when I stay in it. ha ha. That is a quick boost. Scary.....Do you remove your keys when you use a self fill gas station? I've just recently started doing that. I'm 76 yrs old, and we used to trust folks. When I was a kid I left my keys in the ign so I knew where they were.
ReplyDeleteIt COULD happen. But it's not how carjackings DO happen. This is basically another variation of the story where a carjacker sticks a dollar bill on the windshield and the person gets out to see why it's there. Carjackings are almost always spontaneous. The idea of a thief going to all the trouble of tying cans to a car is the kind of thing you would see in a mystery book or a TV show, but not in real life. All that being said, it's always a good idea to lock your car, keep your keys with you when you get out, and look around when you get out of the car any time.
