Sick dog prompts young couple to hit the road with their RV

In 2007, Rene Agredano and her husband Jim Nelson set out for a RV trip. Five years later, they are still on the road. As they approached their 40s, they gave up their businesses in favor of traveling with their fifth wheel trailer after their beloved dog Jerry was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The dog loved to camp, and they loved the dog, so they decided to treat Jerry and themselves to an adventure. In this heartwarming four minute video from PBS, Rene and Jim talk about their life on the road and Jerry, who even when he became a three-legged dog after a life-prolonging amputation, still enjoyed traveling, being outside and playing.

  1. I understand completely and applaud you for giving Jerry such a great gift. My husband and I had a Jack Russell/Whipit we loved as dearly and lost to liver failure (beware of sugerless gum). He also loved to travel in the RV - laying on top of the couch looking out the window. Miss him so very much. Good travels.

  2. We can understand their commitment to Jerry and received strength from them with our own dog, Buck. He was 15 1/2 when he got his own diagnosis of cancer. Off comes the leg and he is doing chemo. He is now 16 1/2 and we also live in a camper with 3 other dogs. Most would have done him in at his age. He is a drug dog that served the public and his master in his career as a trooper so he deserved all we could do for him. The costs are well over 15K, but he is alive and active and we love him more every day. Life is more than money and love isn't restricted to human beings.
