Airstreams join camels by Egypt's Great Pyramids

Now here is a very cool video -- Airstream trailers from the year 1960 driving across the dusty desert by Egypt's Great Pyramids! Then see them parked in a big ol' circle just like covered wagons did back in the Wild West. There's snake charmer music to make this little movie even more mysterious and a few camels round out the festive RV times. The video documents just one stop on an 11,000-mile, seven-month caravan staged by Airstream founder Wally Byam, who called the tour "Capetown to Cairo." Forty-one Airstreams took part. Interestingly, another group is planning a 50th anniversary caravan in a couple of years.

  1. It is absolutely thrilling to read about this gang that went from Cape to Cairo towing their Airstreams.
Surprisingly, it brings back childhood memories because I actually saw them and with total dazzlement and curiousity.

You see, I was a child growing up in a small town in Uganda situated on the banks of the River Nile and Lake Victoria..actually the source of the river Nile..The town was called Jinja and one day,on the way to the falls and passing by the golf course skirting the lake, there was this massive encampment of shiny Aluminum torpedoes.. looked like de-winged Dakota aeroplanes...
Never knew who they were but sure looked like they were wealthy American doods..who else would own those huge station wagons with woody trim and pick ups that looked enormous.
Thanks for bringing it up here. Now I know who they were.
